A Lesson in Generosity

Once, a companion of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Abu Dahdah, resided as my neighbor. In my garden, some branches of his date palm tree leaned towards my house. When the fruits ripened and fell, my children would quickly grab them. Being a person of limited means, Abu Dahdah would sprint towards my house, gently retrieve the dates from my children’s mouths, and leave.

One day, I approached the Prophet (peace be upon him) and complained about Abu Dahdah’s behavior, expressing concern about my children. The Prophet discerned the situation and declared that Abu Dahdah was a hypocrite. Curious, I asked the Prophet if he engaged in any business. The Prophet (peace be upon him) responded, “Give me that palm tree, and in return, I will provide you with a date palm tree in Jannah (Paradise).”

Astounded by the proposition, Abu Dahdah hesitated, questioning whether he was making a wise decision. To convince him, the Prophet mentioned that the tree in Jannah would bring numerous blessings. Finally relenting, Abu Dahdah handed over the tree and took possession of the virtual tree in Paradise.

A fellow companion, Abu Dahdah, who was present, was intrigued by the transaction. He asked the Prophet if he would receive a similar offer for his garden. Prophet Muhammad affirmed, promising him a date palm tree in Jannah in exchange for his earthly garden.

However, Abu Dahdah seemed skeptical. “How much would you sell the tree for?” he inquired. The Prophet responded, “You’re joking! Would I engage in a deceptive trade with Allah’s Prophet?” Abu Dahdah pressed further, “Let me think about it.” Eventually, he agreed, sacrificing his entire garden for the promised tree in Paradise.

Later, Abu Dahdah approached the Prophet, stating that he had indeed engaged in a profitable transaction. The Prophet asked him how he had profited, to which Abu Dahdah replied, “I have traded my garden for an eternal garden in Paradise.”

Abu Dahdah’s act of sacrificing his earthly possessions for a heavenly promise exemplifies the essence of true faith and selflessness. This incident teaches us the profound value of generosity, trust, and the priority of eternal rewards over temporary gains.

When Abu Dahdah passed away, the Prophet witnessed a remarkable sight during his funeral. He proclaimed, “I see one hundred gardens in Paradise over Abu Dahdah’s grave, and the palm tree of Abu Dahdah in Jannah is shaking the hands of Allah, glorifying Him.”

The story of Abu Dahdah’s garden teaches us that true wealth lies in our deeds, and the rewards of selfless acts extend beyond this worldly life. It emphasizes the importance of trust in the divine promises and the boundless blessings that accompany acts of generosity.
